Rabbit Vaccinations

We recommend that rabbits are vaccinated against myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD). Previously this would have been administered through two separate injections; however, our new rabbit vaccines mean that your pet can be protected against myxomatosis and both strains of VHD with just a single injection.

Rabbit Vaccinations From Blythwood Vets

Rabbit vaccinations play a vital role in responsible pet care, offering essential protection against serious but preventable diseases. While rabbits can be vulnerable to several potentially fatal illnesses, advances in veterinary care and routine vaccinations have greatly reduced their prevalence. Because these diseases are now less common, it’s easy to assume they’re no longer a threat. However, they still pose a real risk, which is why keeping your rabbit protected through regular vaccinations remains the best line of defence. Book your next rabbit vaccination appointment here.

How Do Rabbit Vaccinations Work?

Rabbit vaccines contain safe forms of viruses or other infectious agents, either inactivated or weakened, that stimulate an animal’s immune system without causing illness. In response, the body produces antibodies, which act as a defence mechanism. If the animal later encounters the actual disease, these antibodies help prevent it from spreading or causing serious harm.

At Blythwood Vets, we tailor our vaccination recommendations based on your rabbit's lifestyle, individual risk factors, and the latest veterinary guidelines. Thanks to advances in modern medicine, many serious illnesses can now be prevented with just one or two injections.

It’s important to remember, however, that vaccines don’t offer lifelong protection. That’s why regular rabbit booster shots are necessary to maintain immunity. During your rabbit vaccination appointment at Blythwood, our expert vets will discuss your rabbit’s specific needs and ensure they receive the right vaccines at the right intervals for maximum effectiveness.
