Rabbit Microchipping in North London | Blythwood Vets
Microchipping your rabbit is a simple yet crucial step in ensuring their safety and increasing the chances of being reunited if they ever go missing. While microchipping is often associated with dogs and cats, rabbits can benefit just as much from this permanent form of identification.
Rabbits are naturally curious and can escape their enclosures by digging under fences or hopping over barriers. Unlike cats and dogs, they cannot wear collars comfortably, making microchipping one of the best ways to ensure they can be identified if found.

What Is Rabbit Microchipping?
Microchipping is a quick and straightforward procedure in which a tiny chip—about the size of a grain of rice—is implanted under the skin at the back of your rabbit’s neck. This chip contains a unique identification number that can be read using a scanner.
Most veterinary clinics, including Blythwood Vets, as well as animal shelters and local authorities, have access to these scanners. If your rabbit is found, scanning the microchip allows the finder to retrieve your contact details from a national database, ensuring a fast reunion.
Once implanted, the microchip links your pet to you for life. Keeping your information up to date in the database is essential for ensuring a smooth reunion should your rabbit go missing.
And don't worry if you can't remember (or know) whether your pet is microchipped. It is very easy for a member of our team at one of our Blythwood Vets branches to arrange to check for a microchip using a scanner. Rest assured, we all always scan your pet and check that an animal hasn’t already got a working microchip before implanting a new one.
Why Should Rabbits Be Microchipped?
Although microchipping is only legally required for dogs and, from June 2024, cats in England, it is also highly recommended for rabbits and other small pets. Rabbits are prone to escaping, and without identification, it can be difficult to recover them.
Microchipping significantly increases the likelihood of being reunited with your pet, as rescue centres and vets routinely scan stray animals. This quick and simple procedure provides peace of mind, knowing your rabbit has a permanent, secure form of identification.

At the time of your appointment, you will be asked to complete a registration form, from which your details are then submitted to a national database by a Blythwood Vets team member. Your contact details are kept on the database for your pet’s lifetime, and the fees for this are included in the service cost of implantation. For this reason, it is important to update any changes to your contact details as soon as possible to ensure that you can be reunited with your pet if they are ever lost.
At Blythwood Vets we have four practices and serve the North-West London area. Our four branches are in Middlesex, Bushey, Northwood, and Stanmore. So book an appointment at your local branch today or get in touch to speak with one of our friendly team members and find out more!
