May is Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month, a whole month dedicated to raising awareness of the veterinary nursing profession and the vital role they play in animal care and treatment.

Faye is our Head Nurse here at Blythwood Hatch End and she kindly took time out to tell us about life as a vet nurse.

  1. How long have you been a Vet Nurse and what route did you follow to qualify?

  • I took the 2 to 4-year vocational route.
  1. What attracted you to a career as a Veterinary Nurse?

  • I wanted to work with animals and the excellent renumeration.
  1. What does your job as head nurse entail?

  • Smooth running of the practice and supporting the other nurses.
  1. What is the most rewarding thing about being a Vet Nurse?

  • Nursing a very sick patient and seeing them go home.
  1. What kind of attributes do you need to be a good Vet Nurse?

  • Sense of humour, organisation, team player, compassionate & calm under pressure.
  1. What advice would you give someone thinking about a career as a Vet Nurse?

  • It’s not just cuddling puppies – there is a lot of cleaning!
  1. What are the best things about working at Blythwood practice?

  • The best thing about working at Blythwood is my team.
  1. What would be your career highlight so far?

  • Using the qualification to work abroad in Thailand with wild animals.
  1. Have you completed any additional training to support you in your role?

  • No, but I keep up to date with continuing professional development (CPD) courses.
  1. What’s the next step in your career pathway?

  • Continue to work with vets to provide the best care available.
