What conditions can acupuncture be used for?
Acupuncture reduces the pain associated with chronic musculoskeletal conditions (eg arthritis, hip dysplasia, ‘back pain’) and is successfully used alongside a patient’s medical, surgical and physiotherapy treatments. There is a growing body of research into the application of acupuncture to aid recovery and management of a number of other medical conditions and the pain associated with other chronic and/or inflammatory diseases, as well as in reducing post-operative pain and speeding recovery. |

How does acupuncture work?
Research is ongoing into the full extent of the neurophysiological effects of acupuncture but current evidence shows that it affects nerves, muscle tissue and blood vessels local to the acupoint and stimulates nerve pathways within the spinal cord and brain to inhibit ‘pain pathways’. Acupuncture also causes pain-killing chemicals to be released, such as endorphins and opioids, and it inhibits the release of certain inflammatory substances. These effects are ‘analgesic’ and reduce the patient’s pain and inflammation and promote tissue healing. |
